What does "Relearn Type" mean?
All TPMS replacement sensors we sell come pre-programmed to suit the Make, Model, and Part Number as detailed on the product pages.
Once you receive your sensors, the last step is to have them fitted inside the wheels by a tyre installer and then learn them to your vehicle.
What does Learning/Relearning mean?
Every TPMS sensor has a unique ID number.
Your vehicle needs to recognise this unique ID number to operate correctly; otherwise, it will not accept the information from the sensor and won't update the vehicle's systems resulting in possible TPMS warning lights.
Learning/Relearning is the process of informing the vehicle about the ID number and its position on the vehicle allowing all safety systems to reset to factory specifications.
Every manufacturer, and sometimes individual models or production dates, has different methods of achieving this.
Below is a list of the common ways vehicles learn sensors:
Auto-Manual
This learning process generally involves the driver starting a procedure built into the vehicle to reset/relearn the TPMS system.
Once the procedure has been started, the vehicle needs to be driven over a certain speed for a specified amount of time to finalise the process. Common parameters are over 30 kph for a period of 15 minutes.
Auto-Self
This process requires no intervention from the driver to start the learning process and will complete automatically.
OBDII (On-board Diagnostics Port)
Only a compatible OBDII tool, such as the Zylux Z41, can be used to learn the new sensor IDs into the vehicle.
Dealer
If the relearn type is "Dealer" only the franchised dealer can change sensor IDs (Typically for Asian vehicles like Honda or Subaru).
Trigger
This learning process generally involves the driver starting a procedure built into the vehicle to reset/relearn the TPMS system.
Once the procedure has been started, each sensor needs to be triggered by either a TPMS tool (Such as the Zylux Z41) or sometimes by inflating/deflating the tyre until the vehicle confirms the sensor is learned.
This process is used on most Holden/GM and some Ford models.
